On 1 August 2015 Major General Rainey assumed command of the 3rd Infantry Division and served as the Deputy Commanding General-Support United States Forces – Afghanistan, Commander Bagram Airfield, and Commander, Joint Task Force-3 in support of OPERATION FREEDOM SENTINEL until November 2015.
Maj. Gen. Rainey has also served in key staff assignments to include: Joint Chiefs of Staff Intern in Washington, .; Chief of Plans for the 2nd Infantry Division and operations officer for 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment; Executive Officer to the III Corps Commander; G-3 Operations Officer in the V Corps Assault Command Post in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM; Chief of War on Terror Plans for . European Command, and G-3 of the 4th Infantry Division and the Multi-National Division-Baghdad in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are the home of the 3rd Infantry Division, and combine to be the Army’s Premier Power Projection Platform on the Atlantic Coast. It is the largest, most effective and efficient armor training base east of the Mississippi, covering 280,000 acres including parts of Liberty, Long, Tattnall, Evans and Bryan counties in southeast Georgia.
